01. Kanas Lake 喀纳斯湖 · Xinjiang

The lake — Shifts from turquoise to deep jade as the light changes through the day, surrounded by dense pine and birch forest that turns gold in autumn.
Baihaba Village — Nicknamed "God's Private Land", a remote Tuvan settlement offering sunrise mist, starry nights and horse trekking through untouched birch forest.
Hemu Village — A remote border settlement of Kazakhs and Tuvans with spectacular autumn foliage from late September to early October.

02. Sayram Lake 赛里木湖 · Xinjiang

The lake — Vivid turquoise water surrounded by cedar-covered mountain ranges, horses grazing the slopes and cottages dotting the foothills.
The legend — Known as "the last tear of the Atlantic Ocean" — warm humid air travelling 5,000km across the Eurasian continent finally condenses here.
Summer festival — From June to August, Mongolian and Kazakh communities celebrate the Nadam Fair with horse-racing, wrestling and folk performances at the lakeside.

03. Zhangjiajie 张家界 · Hunan

Avatar Floating Peaks — The pillar formations that inspired the film, best viewed from Yuanjiajie at sunrise when mist fills the valleys between them.
Tianmen Mountain — A sacred peak with a natural cave arch at the summit called Heaven's Gate, accessible by the world's longest cable car ride.
Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge — Spanning 430 metres across the canyon at 300 metres above the valley floor — one of the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridges.
Best season — April to October, with spring and autumn offering the clearest views and most dramatic mist conditions.

04. Gannan · Southern Gansu 甘南 · 甘肃南部

Langmusi — A remote Tibetan town straddling two provinces, with monasteries, horse rides and canyon hikes that feel completely untouched by mainstream tourism.
Luqu Wetlands — Vast golden grasslands and wetland plains that stretch across the horizon, flanked by snow peaks and grazed by yaks and horses.
Labrang Monastery — One of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, with a pilgrimage circuit walked daily by monks and devotees from across the Tibetan plateau.
No permit required — Unlike Tibet proper, Gannan requires no special travel permit, making it significantly more accessible for overseas visitors.

05. Tibet's Mountain Landscapes 西藏山地风光 · Tibet

Yamdrok Lake — One of Tibet's four holy lakes, shimmering in vivid turquoise against a backdrop of snow peaks and open highland.
Karola Glacier — A wall of ancient ice shining at 5,039 metres, visible directly from the road — one of those sights that makes you pull over and just stand there.
Everest Base Camp — At 5,100 metres, stand at the foot of the world's highest mountain. Spend the night at Rongbuk Monastery and wake up to the Milky Way stretched across the clearest sky you have ever seen.

06. West Sichuan · Yading & Daocheng 稻城亚丁 · 四川

Milk Lake & Five Colour Lake — Two alpine lakes sitting at high altitude, named for their extraordinary colours — one milky turquoise, one shifting through greens and blues depending on the light.
The Meadows — Vast highland grasslands surrounding the peaks, covered in wildflowers in summer and turning deep gold and red in autumn — one of the most photographed landscapes in western China.
Best season — June to July for wildflowers and summer green, or October for the dramatic autumn colours when the entire valley turns gold.
